Surviving the Week Everything Counts

Finals week rewards a kind of endurance nobody actually trains you for.

Finals week compresses a semester's worth of pressure into a handful of days, and it's one of the only times most students are asked to sustain near-peak output for several days in a row with almost no recovery in between. That's a genuinely hard physiological ask, not just a scheduling problem, and treating it purely as a willpower test tends to make it harder, not easier.

The instinct to sacrifice sleep for more study hours is one of the most common and most counterproductive choices students make during finals — sleep is when memory consolidation actually happens, meaning the hours "saved" by staying up often cost more than they add. Short, focused study blocks with real breaks tend to outperform marathon sessions, even though marathon sessions feel more productive in the moment.

You don't have to feel calm to get through finals week. You just need enough sleep, enough food, and short enough study blocks that your brain can actually hold onto what you're putting into it.
